The Power of the Pause
Sep 01, 2026
Emotions can rise quickly. Sometimes it happens in a conversation. Other times it's an email that catches us at the wrong moment. We may even notice the tension building in our bodies before we fully understand why.
In those moments, one of the most powerful things we can do is also one of the simplest: pause.
A pause creates a little space between what we are feeling and what we do next. It doesn't mean ignoring the emotion or pretending everything is okay. It simply allows us to notice what is happening before we respond. That small space matters.
In the Back to Zero Framework, returning to zero isn't about never experiencing big emotions. It's about becoming more aware of ourselves within those moments so we can choose what comes next with greater care.
Simple Practice
This week, practice a five-second pause when you notice yourself approaching a level 10.
Maybe you're responding to an email, sitting in a meeting, talking with a child, or having a difficult conversation.
When you feel the tension building:
Pause. Breathe. Count slowly to five. Then choose your next move.
Five seconds may not change the situation, but they can change how you enter it.
Pause & Reflect
What changes when I give myself a few seconds before responding?
You don't have to get it right every time. Just practice noticing the moments when a pause might give you the space you need.
Pause. Breathe. Choose your next move.
That's where the practice begins.

Dr. Joy
